Fry breads are not only a usual accompaniment to meals and a delicious snack, but also an integral part of ritual for the Seminole Maroons:

Traditionally, all the Fridays of holiday months, such as Thanksgiving, Easter, and Christmas, are days of fast and abstinence from 6 O'clock on Thursday evening to 6 O'clock on Friday evening. The fast is broken at a communal, Friday evening meal by sharing first the fry bread, and then other foods, such as stews, tetta poon, pinto beans, et cetera, among family and friends.

The Seminole Maroons serve tamales any time but especially at holiday time. On an appointed morning, several women will congregate in someone's kitchen, enjoying the laugher, news, and general company of each other as they prepare a minimum of fifty dozen tortillas to be served for holiday dinners and when someone drops in for coffee or tequila, as a snack, an so on. Then, when the festive day glides into evening, each of the ladies takes home a portion of the day's home cooking and happiness to share with her waiting family and other loved ones who will soon be visiting in the spirit of the season.
