Paula Morin raises public awareness of the relationship between wild horses and the landscape and culture of the Great Basin region of the American West. Her book Honest Horses (University of Nevada Press, 2006) emerged out of the critically acclaimed national exhibition, Honest Horses: A Portrait of the Mustang in Nevada, which featured Morin’s original hand-painted black and white photographs and sixty-two oral history conversations with individuals intimately connected to the horses and the land. Together, image and story reveal an objective portrait of the complex issues surrounding the presence of wild horses on a fragile landscape. The exhibition continues as part of the Nevada Touring Initiative and is augmented by an interdisciplinary educational curriculum designed for community college classes and high school studies in literature, science, and the arts.
